For $25, this is a super addition to any toolbox -- or kitchen cabinet. This is a great gift idea for dad -- or mom, for that matter.

Here's why:

* Quick-release collar allows you to pop in a screw or drill bit in a flash. A nice, tight grip.
* Multiple forward or reverse speeds at the click of a button. Torque control on the collar is easy to adjust and visual icons make it easy to figure out which one is best depending on whether you're using a screw or drill bit. Sweet.
* From 3-6 hours of operation on a single charge. Because it can take about six hours to re-charge, it's a good idea to leave this plugged into an outlet in the kitchen, bathroom or garage (but not longer than 3-4 weeks without use to avoid reduction in battery life).
* Ability to pivot the position of the handle or angle is big plus and great way to avoid carpel tunnel pain.
* The LED light, built-in removable tape measure and bit holder on the handle are fluff, but add to the coolness factor.
* Surprisingly light weight for it's rather large size.

(More customer reviews)There are those who are loyal to Milwaukee or DeWalt, but they are probably not up-to-date on what is being offered.I have carefully checked specs on cordless drills--and so should you.You will find that Bosch offers more torque than it's competitors and is usually lower priced.This drill is terrific.Much lighter and smaller than the old Ni-cad battery Bosch I used to have.I loved the little 12 volt, but if you do much with large drill bits or forstner bits you will need this 14.4 volt.I used to have lots of color in my tools: Milwaukee red, DeWalt yellow, and so on.Now I see a shelf of blue.I have not been disappointed in any of my Bosch purchases.I have 3 drills, 3 routers, 2 sanders, and a jig saw.When I replace my circular saw I will look first at Bosch.

DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this drill to replace my Dewalt DC925, which fell off a roof and landed in a big nasty mud hole, I just figured the drill was toast and ordered a new one, saved the 925 for salvageable parts. The DCD950 and the DCD970 are the EXACT same drill except the clutch ring, which is black on the 950 and silver on the 970. The difference is the batteries that are included 950 has the XRPs and 970 has the new NANO's(lithium-ion). OK, back to the comparison
Pros of the DCD970/950 VS. the DCD925
1. Much Better balance
2. More power in both low and mid-range(Dewalt says the DC925 has 480 unit watts vs the DCD970's 450, but the DCD970 is more powerful
3. WAY smoother speed selector (moves back and forth, not in an semi-ellipse like the 925)
4. L.E.D light on front
5. Shorter in length
6. Drill/screw/hammerdrill, various clutch settings are no longer on the same ring, clutch now has its own ring.

Cons of the DCD970
1. Due to pressure from a group of so called "tool users" who ONLY seem to care about aesthetics, Dewalt changed the base to the new nano style, which means if you actually use the drill it only has space for one bit on the front and WILL Not hold a screw guide or short nutsetters very well, whereas the old style base could fit a screw guide for TEK screws on one side and a 1/4" and 5/16" short nutsetters for tapcons on the other side.

However, overall the DCD970/950 is a excellent drill and deserves 4.75 stars, if Dewalt would change the base it would be a 5 star item, but that will never happen thanks to people who care more about how a tool looks rather than how well it works.

I cleaned off my old DC925 and put in a fresh battery and the thing works!! Well now I have two, I guess that is what I get for asuming things, oh well I like the DCD970 better anyway.

Bosch 36618-02 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Compact-Tough Litheon Drill/Driver with 2 Slim Batteries Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this drill along with a Makita BDF452 and gave both a workout in my garage. My test used 2"x6" pressure treated lumber. My goal was to test power, battery endurance and comfort of use. With both drills, I drilled qty (10) 1" spade bit holes, qty (20) 3/8" bit holes and sunk qty (75) 2" drywall screws. My hand and arm were tired so I quit, but suffice it to say, neither drill quit, so I called battery endurance test a tie. I believe the Bosch had slightly more power and speed, but the Makita had plenty of both for my needs. Both drills gave your arm a good twist when the spade bit would catch and hold. In a close race, I declared the Bosch the winner in power category. The Makita was clearly a more comfortable drill to use. It fit my hand well and the trigger was easy to use. The Bosch handle is configured at a bit of an angle and while using the spade bit the back of the drill seemed to press into my hand. Also, during use my finger naturally moved to the bottom of the trigger and it became a bit uncomfortable. Both drills are very well built and neither got hot during my tests. At the end of the day I preferred the Makita because it was slightly smaller (about 3/4" shorter) and clearly had a more comfortable grip position during use.

(More customer reviews)Let's not get carried away.This is not a big winch like the ones you see fastened to the bumpers of monster 4-wheelers.It is much simpler than that.And for what it is designed to do it works very well.For infrequent light duty winching this is the perfect tool.

It has a built in handle for carrying, detachable power and control cords, and enough cable to get you within 25 feet or so of whatever you are winching.It has a 2000 lb rating, and will pull that much easily.Not quickly, but easily.It has a manual crank that can be attached to the shaft.It also has a very handy mounting plate designed to slip over the ball on a ball-hitch.

The clutch is manual, and drag is set by means of a threaded knob on the shaft. It is very simple to use.Simply connect the power and control cables, loosen the clutch, pull the cable to whatever you need to pull and hook it up.Then tighten the clutch and press the button on the control handle and start winching.Be patient.There is only one speed and it is slow.But it works.

I have tested the winch by hanging it from a beam and picking up the front of a truck with no problem.Then we really put it to the test by using it to pull our garden tractor out of the mud.It was a long pull so we needed to add a tug strap but it was easy enough to hook up.The pull was painless.The winch is slow because it gets it's power through gearing. It is quite a drain on a car battery, so it helps to leave your engine running while you pull.

Not something you would want to use every day but very handy to have around.For my money this is a 5-star tool.Great for the boat owner or for use around the farm.

Gerber 22-41507 Clutch Mini Pliers Tool, Red Review

(More customer reviews)This Gerber Clutch Mini Pliers Tool (in its so-called Red Tail Hawk color, as you see here) is the second one we've gotten. The first one was a Gerber Clutch Mini Pliers Tool in the "Special Ops Gray" color. It was purchased for my son as a Christmas present, and it became a tool that he came to love almost as much as his Victorinox Swiss Army Tinker Knife.

This handy device is a compact multi-tool, and it has red anodized aluminum handles with the Gerber and Clutch names on one side, as can be seen in the photos. The handles have been drilled out in eight places, possibly to reduce weight or more likely for visual appeal. There's a small keychain ring on one end of the tool.

The Clutch are six stainless steel tools packed between its handles, and they consist of a 1.75 in (44 mm) knife blade, small flat screwdriver, a simple cross-point (Phillips) screwdriver, a file combined with a nail cleaner, a bottle opener combined with a medium flat screwdriver, and a pair of tweezers. The tools all snap into place very well, and the handles also enclose the spring-loaded needle nose mini-pliers.

This little multi-tool sees almost daily use, and the needle nose pliers are small enough to be exceptionally handy. They have a good grip, and as they're spring loaded, they've been quite good for basic one-handed uses when necessary.

The small screwdriver works very well, as does the larger one, and the tips are the right size for light work. The flattened Phillips head screwdriver is alright for very light work, and from its design one can see that it's not made for heavy-duty work. Don't get me wrong, as there would be no way to put a full #2 Phillips head on a multi-tool of this size.

The tweezers work well also, as I found out recently when removing a couple of glass splinters from my finger while removing a broken mirror in a bathroom.

The knife blade is very sharp. I've had to sharpen mine a few times, and the blade on mine seems to be a bit 'softer' than that on my son's version, so I keep it for light use only. Others have reported that the tip bends easy, so remember to use it as a knife blade only, and not as a screwdriver or a lever. It does a great job opening newly-arrived packages and cartons from Amazon!

Pros:
* Excellent value for the money.
* The small needle nose plier head makes it quite quite handy.
* The red handles make the Clutch easy to find and locate.
* It has a limited lifetime warranty, and Gerber is good with them.

Cons:
* The anodized aluminum handles may show wear over time.
* Blade requires sharpening a bit more than other similar products.Summary:

I'm rating this at 4.5, and only slightly downgrading it because of questions on the blade sharpness as already noted above. If used as it's intended it should be quite functional for many years.

This multi-tool is quite similar to the Leatherman Squirt P4 Multitool which also has the small pliers, but it's larger than my Leatherman Micra Multitool, another handy tool that I've had for years (see my review). The smaller Micra has scissors, but no pliers, so they are different small multi-tools for different purposes.

If these seem that they might be too small for your use, then check out the Gerber Suspension Multi-Plier. This larger model is highly functional, and is another good example of Gerber meeting the ongoing needs of their customers.

The Gerber Clutch is a bargain, and it's also a present for birthdays and Christmas stocking stuffers... and for Christmas, the color is right!

The big complain is that it's often too hard to pull the tiny tools out of the clutch (a broken fingernail on the first try).It soon became a mental struggle on whether to risk my nail (to pull a tool), or walk to other rooms for other tools.Also, the tweezers is probably of little use as designed.

DEWALT DWD110K 7.0 Amp 3/8-Inch VSR Pistol Grip Drill Kit with Keyless Chuck Review

(More customer reviews)I have only started using this drill, but so far no problems, and the keyless chuck has worked great.

I'm writing this review because I purchased and returned four drills before settling on this one, and I thought others might benefit from my recent comparison shopping.The Craftsman 5 amp basic level T-handle 3/8" drill is loud, like an F-16 taking off, and only goes to 1500 rpm.(Craftsman makes a red professional model with more power and higher speed, but I did not even try it because it seemed heavy and awkward.) The Ryobi D41 T-handle felt great in my hand but has less power (4.5 amps) and only 1600 rpm, and it is still noisier than the DeWalt, with a higher-pitched scream.Hitachi makes a nice 6 amp drill with speeds to 2500, the D 10VH, and it has a number of nice features, but it has the same high-pitched scream only maybe worse.It also lacks the bubble levels that I have come to appreciate.The Rigid Professional 3/8" VSR has similar features to the DeWalt and uses the same Jacobs keyless chuck, but it felt a little more off-balance in my hand and had that same jet-airplane whine.The DeWalt is considerably quieter, even though the Rigid is only 6.5 amps compared to 7 amps for the DeWalt.The sound of the DeWalt is more like a table saw or cutoff starting up than it is like the high-pitched grinding noise of a hand-held circular saw.

All this emphasis on noise level is because my dad is already hard of hearing, but it affects my comfort and enjoyment of the drill, too.Despite the range of power levels and max speeds, the drills all weighed between 3.2 and 3.6 pounds on my scale, with the Ryobi and Hitachi at the lower end and the Rigid and DeWalt at the upper end.

For reviewers complaining about the DWD110k or its predecessor not having the finesse to stop driving drywall screws just below the surface like their cordless drill/driver does: if you want a corded drill to do that, get one with a clutch, specifically made for driving screws as well as drilling.In my experience, corded drills, especially those with top speeds over 1500 rpm (which you want for various drill applications) make poor drivers and especially poor drywall screw installers.So far the DeWalt DWD110K seems to have as good a control at low speeds as the best of the rest, and maybe better control than the Craftsman and the Rigid.

And if the case matters to you:The DeWalt case, while roomy enough for the drill and cord and bits, is a little more compact than most drill cases.It also has a metal latch that won't fatigue and break off like plastic latches on other cases often do, and a piano hinge all along one side (albeit plastic molded as part of the case with a steel rod all the way through).So the DeWalt got the nod for best case among those I tried.(The Rigid only comes with a nylon bag.)

(More customer reviews)I have been comparing all sorts of clamps, and these stand out as a good quality, low cost compromise.It looks like they do not come with the rubber clamping pads when you buy them here at Amazon, so I would suggest buying that extra (if you can find it), or buying these clamps somewhere else (I bought mine at Woodcraft).The design of the pads is the best feature of this clamp.The upper pad is shaped in a way where it "hugs" the cast body of the clamp; it will not fall off when you're in the middle of clamping something.The lower pad is the usual tight fitting one.The handle is great (rubbery plastic).

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the ratcheting action (moving the lower part of the clamp) could be smoother.

But, bottom line:spend $2 more than what you would for the el-cheapo and get this clamp!You won't regret it.(But make sure you get pads!)
